A powerful reminder I recently received

May 01, 2025

Assalaamu'alaykum,

I wanted to share something from a recent Shukr Circle we had inside of our Breaking Barriers group. We were reflecting on verse 10 of Surah Al-Kahf:

"When those youths sought refuge in the cave and said, 'Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and guide us in our matter.'” [18:10]

This one ayah held so many valuable lessons, but one in particular stood out to me and I thought it might resonate with you too.

The youth Allah speaks about were living in a land filled with luxury, but in order to protect their faith, they made the bold decision to leave it all behind and hide in a barren cave.

From a practical perspective, this plan didn’t seem to offer much hope.

But they called out to Allah with conviction.

And how did Allah ‘azza wajal respond?

He protected them for centuries, temporarily took away their hearing to grant them peaceful rest, nourished and preserved their bodies throughout the years, turned an entire society back to belief and ultimately delivered them safely back to their homeland.

This reminds me of another powerful moment in the story of Musa (AS). When he and his people were trapped between Firaun’s army and the Red Sea, his people felt completely terrified and overpowered.

But Musa (AS) confidently said,

"No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me." [26:62].

In that moment, he was inspired to strike the sea with his staff - an action that seems small and almost irrelevant to the gravity of the situation.

Yet, Allah parted the sea, destroyed a formidable tyrant and his entire army and enabled Musa (AS) and his people to miraculously walk across the seabed to safety, SubhanAllah!

What struck me in both of these stories is that the actions taken by the youth and Musa (AS) were tiny compared to the monumental response from Allah.

There wasn’t a grand strategy or huge effort on their part but what they had was an unshakable trust in Allah.

Their conviction was so powerful that Allah opened doors for them in unimaginable ways.

What I took away from these stories is that when I feel stuck, unsure of my next steps or can’t see a clear path forward, I need to strengthen my belief that Allah will guide me through and give me the best outcome on the grandest scale beyond what I could ever hope for.

And I know deep in my heart that even the smallest actions, such as sending an email, making that one phone call or taking one tiny step forward, can lead to incredible results as long as I place my trust firmly in Allah.

This reminder is something I’m trying to apply to all areas of my life - from my personal goals to work and relationships.

It’s both comforting and liberating to know that while I make the effort, it's Allah who manages the outcomes.

The biggest lesson I’ve taken from this one ayah is to never underestimate what Allah can do and to remember that the outcome is never proportionate to my actions - it’s Allah who truly takes care of everything...

And in Him, we should place our absolute and deepest trust.
