The false belief that was sabotaging my growth

Assalaamu'alaykum,

It's embarrassing to admit, but I had this one major false belief that held me back for years.

I used to think that I shouldn't study or try to memorise too many things at once because my brain wouldn't be able to absorb it all. Like there was some finite limit I'd hit and everything would just... overflow.

But when I started studying the brain and its capacity, I realised this was completely wrong.

Allah has created us with this phenomenal machine, our minds have incredible learning capacity. Not only can we absorb and retain vast amounts of information, but we can filter this knowledge and preserve it as wisdom that lives in our very being.

Think about it, you can memorise entire surahs, learn multiple new languages, master complex skills and still have room for more. The brain doesn't get "full" the way we might imagine it does.

It actually gets stronger the more we use it.

After this realisation dropped, instead of rationing my learning, I started embracing it. Instead of worrying about overloading myself, I started trusting in the incredible capacity Allah has blessed us with.

SubhanAllah, how often do we limit ourselves with beliefs that simply aren't true?

Here's three simple approaches that can completely transform your learning:

  1. Seek knowledge with sincerity - When your intention is pure and you're learning for the sake of Allah, not just to impress others or collect certificates, the knowledge sticks differently. It becomes part of who you are.
  2. Connect new information to what you already know - Your brain loves patterns. When you link new concepts to existing knowledge, you're creating stronger neural pathways. It's like building bridges instead of isolated islands.
  3. Review and reflect regularly - Don't just consume and move on. Take time to ponder what you've learned, make duaa about it and see how it applies to your life. This is when information transforms into wisdom.

Also, a quick reminder that you can access something that could widen your perspectives and uplift your spiritual journey, InshaAllah.

May Allah make us seekers of truth and grant us the kind of knowledge that transforms us from the inside out. Ameen ya Rabb.

Reflection of the Week

Think about a moment when a piece of knowledge became something more,  when it moved from your mind to your heart and turned into wisdom. What was it pointing you back to?

What changed in you after that?

Dua of the Week
