The Jewel Within the Jewel: Preparing for the Day of Arafah

Assalaamu’alaykum,

I pray this finds you well and that your heart is beginning to feel the sweetness and anticipation of these blessed days.

Among the treasures of Dhul Hijjah lies a jewel within the jewel…The Day of Arafah.

A day so sacred and overflowing with mercy that it shines like the crown of these blessed days.

Try to imagine it for a moment...

The plains of Arafah filled with millions of souls. Hands raised, tears flowing, voices trembling with hope, repentance and longing for Allah.

Perhaps the closest glimpse of Yawm al-Qiyamah we will witness in this life.

Yet one of the most beautiful realities of this day is that Allah did not restrict its blessings only to those standing upon Arafah.

In His immense mercy, He opened the doors wide for every Muslim across the world.

So whether you are at home, at work, caring for family or carrying your own private struggles, the invitation is there for you.

And by Allah’s mercy, this day has the power to completely rewrite your life story.

Allah says: "By the dawn. And by the ten nights…" (89:1–2)

These are the days Allah Himself swore by and when Allah swears by something, it is to draw our attention to something so magnificent, so weighty, that it should stop us in our tracks.

And held within these blessed days lies this extraordinary jewel…

Here's three ways we can prepare our hearts mentally, emotionally and spiritually for the Day of Arafah:

1. Fast with sincerity and presence:

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that fasting the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.

Ask yourself…How can I elevate my fast with my whole being?

Not only abstaining from food and drink, but fasting with your eyes, your tongue and your limbs.

Fasting with sincerity in the heart. Fasting from distraction, heedlessness and anything else that pulls you away from Allah.

2. Long deeply to be among those freed from the Hellfire

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah." (Muslim)

SubhanAllah. Take a moment to pause and reflect on this.

This is an invitation to live the hadith. Spend the day in worship and istighfar as much as your circumstances allow so that Allah can see your longing.

So He can see your desperation to be among those whose names are written on the list of souls freed from the Fire.

3. Prepare your duaas before the day arrives

The Day of Arafah is among the greatest days for duaa.

We do not want to leave anything off the table. Yet when the day arrives, it's quite easy to forget all that our hearts longed to say. So prepare your list beforehand.

Ask for your dunya and your akhirah.
Ask for healing, guidance, provision and forgiveness.
Ask for your loved ones.
Ask for the Ummah.

Ask for what feels impossible. This is not the day for just realistic duaas, this is the day for delusional duaas because there is no limit to Allah’s treasures and no boundary to what He can grant.

And protect and  treasure especially the sacred window between Asr and Maghrib.

Do not underestimate what Allah can bless, remove, replace, grant or transform through a single sincere moment of calling upon Him.

Keep your tongue moist with this beautiful dhikr:

"Laa ilaaha illAllah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shay’in qadeer."

There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.

This is not a day to move through on autopilot, dear reader.

Make it extraordinary.

Go as close to Allah as you can, because He is so near… unless we are the ones who turn away.

Reflection of the Week

If this Day of Arafah became the turning point your soul needed…

What would you ask Allah for with complete honesty, hope and surrender?

Dua of the Week

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni

O Allah, You are Most Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.

(Tirmidhi, 3513)

Allah's name of the Week

Al-Kareem (The Most Generous, The Most Noble)

Ya Kareem, You give beyond what we deserve and beyond what we imagine possible. Open our hearts to the treasures of this blessed day, draw us near to You, and allow us to ask of You with certainty, hope, and complete trust in Your limitless generosity.

Aameen, ya rabbal aalameen.
