Essential Ramadan Prep (Part 4/4): Connect your heart to Him

Feb 29, 2024

Assalaamu'alaykum,

Think of the person you love the most on this planet.

Now think of the reasons behind your affection for them.

You might be thinking of your beloved mother, who tenderly envelops you in her warmth, compassion and unconditional love.

Or it could be your spouse, who protects you and your possessions while showering you with care and kindness.

Or maybe it’s your dear friend who is attentive, always ready with a listening ear and willing to go to great lengths for you.

Your relationship with this person is built upon the solid foundations of knowing them and the qualities they possess

But now, imagine that relationship is stripped of that knowledge.

How connected would you still feel to them solely by the title of your relationship with them?

If you only knew them as your mother, your spouse or your friend.

This relationship could still be functional but would lack depth and genuine connection.

The most important relationship in your life is the one between you and your Creator.

And yes, we believe in Him as our God and do our best to make life decisions reflective of that belief.

But by not taking the time to truly know Him, we might inadvertently be forfeiting the profound solace and liberation that comes from a deeper, more meaningful understanding of who Allah is.

And He made the pathway to knowing Him easy for us by revealing His 99 Names.

He could have designed it so that we simply learn His Names and come to know Him through the meanings of each one.

But He did more than that for us.

He gave us a way to experience Him and each of His Names by uniquely designing tests for us.

Through these tests, we can come to know Him and develop a strong bond with Him.

Here are five examples of what you will find when you seek Him during life’s more challenging moments:

  • When you experience heartbreak, you will find ease in Al-Jabbaar (The Restorer). He is the One who mends hearts.
  • When you face rejection, you will find belonging in Al Wadud (The Most Loving). He reassures you that you’re never alone.
  • When you feel lost in the dark, you will call out to Al Haadi (The Guide). He spreads light to guide you to the straight path.
  • When you feel like what you want is out of your reach, Ar-Razzaaq (The Provider) will fill your heart and hands with what you need.
  • When you're down on your knees, feeling constricted as if all doors are closing, you will find Al-Fattaah (The Opener) suddenly placing you in front of magnificent doors swung wide open.

SubhanAllah! This is the beauty of our relationship with our Rabb! When we sincerely get to know Him, we will find Him and His presence in every aspect of our life.

This honest heartfelt relationship between a servant and His Master is what elevates the servant from worldly shackles and fills their heart with Sukoon (tranquillity).

As believers, we’re told to fast in Ramadan, so we can attain Taqwa (God-consciousness).

Taqwa intensifies as we deepen our knowledge of Allah and experience His beautiful Names and Attributes.

As we enter this blessed month, I encourage us all to use this time to connect with the Names of Allah so we can nurture our bond with Him and give our relationship more substance, meaning and above all else, unshakeable trust.
