Powerful reminders from the Quran

Assalaamu’alaykum,

One of the miracles of the Qur'an is that the lessons, hope and inspiration found within its stories are timeless. Even though they took place many centuries ago, every time we reflect on them they still offer us direction, hope and inspire us with guidance that is just as relevant today as it was back then.

They remind me that we don't need to know exactly what lies ahead before we take action, we just need to trust Him enough to take the means He provides, whether it feels small or significant.

For example, if we look at the story of the youth in Surah Al-Kahf.

Allah tells us that they fled from their people and sought refuge in a cave, praying, "Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and guide us in our matter." (18:10)

From a worldly perspective, hiding in a cave wouldn't seem like a good solution. It offered no real protection against a tyrannical ruler, no guarantee of safety and no obvious long term plan for what they would do next.

But they did not place their trust in the cave itself. They placed their trust in Allah, believing that if they sought His guidance before taking the best course of action they knew, He would take care of everything else. In response, Allah protected them, preserved them for centuries and made their story a timeless sign for generations to come and ultimately returned them to safety when the time was right.

When I was going through a difficult time in my life and felt directionless, my ustadha reminded me of another beautiful example from the Qur'an: the story of Hajar (as), who found herself lost and alone in a barren desert with her baby. Just imagine how desperate she would've have felt standing in this barren desert with no water, no food and no sign that anyone was coming to help.

What did she do? She trusted her Rabb and took whatever action she could, running between Safa and Marwah searching for a solution.

Again, from a worldly perspective, there was no reason to believe that running between two rocky hills would produce water. But Hajar (as) did not allow the absence of visible results to stop her from making every effort she could, whilst trusting that her Lord would save her.

Then Allah caused the well of Zamzam to gush beneath her feet.

That single act of trusting Allah and taking whatever means she could, not only opened the door to saving her...her footsteps became an act of worship that every pilgrim performing Hajj and Umrah continues to honour to this day.

By comparison, her effort seemed small but the response transformed history. SubhanAllah!

What fills me with hope about both of these stories is that the actions themselves seemed so small compared to what Allah brought about through them. A cave and a desperate run hardly appear to be the means through which history would be changed, yet Allah opened doors that no human being could ever have anticipated because His servants placed their trust in Him before they saw the outcome.

It makes me think about how many opportunities we miss because we're waiting for certainty before taking the first step.

Perhaps our dependence on our senses and needing to see a way forward before believing one is possible, has us convinced that one duaa, one conversation or one small act could never make much difference, but SubhanAllah the Qur'an repeatedly calls us back to a different reality through these timeless stories, reminding us that sincere effort made for the sake of Allah can become the very means through which He opens doors far greater than we could ever have imagined.

These stories remind me that my responsibility is never to anticipate or control the outcome, but to keep taking sincere steps, however small, in the direction that pleases Allah while surrendering the results to Him with complete trust, knowing that His ability to open doors will always be infinitely greater than my ability to see them.

What do these stories inspire in you?

What is one area of your life where you've been waiting for certainty before taking action?

Identify one step you feel intuitively will move you in a purposeful direction, renew intentions, say bismillah and without overthinking it... take that step!

Dua of the Week

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

Allahumma inni as'alukal-hudā wat-tuqā wal-'afāfa wal-ghinā.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, mindfulness of You, chastity and self-sufficiency.

(Sahih Muslim)

Allah's name of the Week

Al-Fattah (The Opener)

Ya Fattaḥ, open for us the doors that are best for our dunya and akhirah. Open our hearts to trust You when the path ahead seems unclear and help us to take the means with sincerity, knowing that every door You open is better than anything we could open for ourselves. Grant us the certainty to keep walking towards You, even when we cannot yet see where You are leading us.

Aameen, ya rabbal aalameen.
